The Renaissance
The Renaissance, which is a term that means “rebirth,” began in Italy in the 1300’s and continued until the 1600’s. The Renaissance began when feudalism ended due to the Hundred Year’s War, the Black Plague, and the rise of nations. When feudalism ended and the plague died off, people who survived these hardships wanted to celebrate life. This want to celebrate life and one’s self was the start of humanism
Humanism is an idea that encourages the celebration of individual achievement, education, and speaking out against the church. Many people adopted this idea after surviving the Black Plague because they wanted to embrace life and their achievements. Humanism allowed people to still be Christian and worship God, but not sacrifice their life to worshipping Him. Humanism encouraged its followers to test the church’s teachings and speak for themselves. Humanism had a huge impact on the lives of the people who survived the Hundred Year’s War and the Black Plague. The church’s teachings were no longer taken blindly by the followers of humanism, and people embraced life instead of suffering through it for God.
The arts were a huge part of the Renaissance. A new style of art called “perspective,” was used in many paintings and drawings. Many artists’ work was admired during the Renaissance, and people called “patrons” paid artists to live at their homes and paint for them. Leonardo da Vinci was an artist who was famous for The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. He was a genius inventor, and he was also interested in anatomy and geometry. Raphael was also an artist who was known for many works, including The School of Athens. Michelangelo was a sculptor and painter who was famous for conveying intense feeling in his works such as Moses. His work portrayed a sense of power.
Various things like humanism and art helped the Renaissance to flourish and begin a new era of learning and thinking. Without art techniques like perspective, art today would not be the same. And without a growth in humanism people might have never learned to embrace life while worshipping God.
